The Obamas LGBT White House Reception

The Obamas received hundreds for the LGBT reception in the East Room of the White House

Despite skepticism among the gay community and a wary sense that President Obama might not have the courage to deliver on his campaign promises, he got a pretty good reception from LGBT attendees at his Pride Month reception at the White House Monday.

Obama drew early and enthusiastic applause from the crowd of 250-300 LGBT families, volunteers, community leaders, federal employees, state and local lawmakers, and heads of LGBT lobbying/activist organizations gathered in the East Room as he called out greetings to openly gay appointees and gay rights activists, then delivered remarks for about 20 minutes. "Welcome to your White House," he said to the crowd as he addressed it.

As noted elsewhere, Obama has yet to earn the trust of many in the gay political community. His administration hasn't prioritized a repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell in Congress; its Justice Department defended the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the Clinton-signed bill that defines marriage as between a man and a woman--an opinion that's been called insulting to the gay community. He doesn't believe in gay marriage. The message gays have been gleaning from the administration thusfar is: be patient.

President Obama promised the Gay Community won't be disappointed in the end

"We seek an America in which no one feels the pain of discrimination based on who you are or who you love, and I know that many in this room don't believe that progress has come fast enough, and I understand that," he said. "It's not for me to tell you to be patient anymore than it was for others to counsel patience to African-Americans who were petitioning for equal rights a half century ago. But I say this: We have made progress, and we will make more. And I want you to know that I expect and hope to be judged not by words, not by promises that I made, but by promises that my administration keeps ... We've been in office six months now. I suspect that by the time this administration is over, I think you guys will have pretty good feelings about the Obama administration."

But Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told Chuck Todd of MSNBC/NBC that by 2012 DOMA will be repealed:

Polls are with Obama (USAToday, NBC, WAPO/ABC)

Obama made folks mad yesterday about the auto industry, but the fact is that many Americans are standing with him. As we all know, the problems of this economy did not pop up as a surprise, but was there for a very long time. Getting out of all this mess and with many companies now wanting a bailout to sustain, will take time. Not everyone will be saved, look at the auto industry. GM or Chrysler is going to fall and that means with no help from the government into bankruptcy. That is just a fact. While folks may be hopping mad, overall the poll numbers are with Obama.

The number of Americans who believe that the nation is headed in the right direction has roughly tripled since Barack Obama's election, and the public overwhelmingly blames the excesses of the financial industry, rather than the new president, for turmoil in the economy, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

At this early stage in his presidency, Obama continues to benefit from a broadly held perception that others should bear the bulk of responsibility for the severe economic problems that confront his administration. Americans see plenty of offenders, but only about a quarter blame the president and his team for an economy that's in the ditch.

Overall perceptions about the country parallel a rapid increase in the percentage of Americans who say the economy is improving. For the first time since late 2004, the gap between the numbers saying the economy is getting better and those saying it's getting worse is in the single digits (27 percent to 36 percent).

Two-thirds of Americans approve of the way Obama is handling the country's top job, and six in 10 give him good marks on issue No. 1, the flagging economy. Those figures are little changed from last month. But he receives lower marks for dealing with the federal budget deficit after submitting a plan that would see continued huge deficits over the next decade. Fifty-two percent back Obama on his approach to the deficit, with the public split about evenly over whether belt-tightening or big increases in spending should be used to try to improve the economy.

The Public is Standing Behind Barack Obama

Poll, after poll, continues to show that the American Public is standing behind this president, while the Republicans are just spinning out of control. The public don't blame the mess of the economy on President Obama, they believe he inherited it and Michelle Obama has the best poll numbers of a First Lady. Some are comparing FLOTUS to Eleanor Roosevelt. As for the GOP? Their nasty rhetoric and divisive tricks have just turned the public off to them. No wonder King Rush is taking control.

In the survey, 68 percent have a favorable opinion of the president, including 47 percent whose opinion is "very positive" — both all-time highs for Obama in the poll. Moreover, 67 percent say they feel more hopeful about his leadership and 60 percent approve of his job in the White House.

Just 26 percent view the Republican Party positively, which is an all-time low for the party. That's compared with 49 percent who have a favorable view of the Democratic Party.

In addition, a combined 56 percent say the previous Bush administration deserved "almost all" of the blame or a "major part" of the blame for the partisanship in Washington, and a combined 41 percent say the same of congressional Republicans.

Also, the public overwhelmingly believes the GOP's opposition to Obama's policies and programs is based on politics: 56 percent say they're trying to gain political advantage, versus 30 percent who say they're standing up for their principles.

Finally, Americans don't seem to have confidence in the Republican Party when it comes to the economy. By a 48-20 percent margin, they think the Democratic Party would do a better job of getting the country out of the recession.

Republicans, Hart argues, "have been tone deaf to the results of the 2008 election... They never heard the message. They continue to preach the old-time religion."

McInturff, the GOP pollster, agrees. "These are difficult and problematic numbers."

This is being rumored. The deal is that Burris will be seated, will not run in 2010 as he as vocally indicated he would do, then leave office into an ambassadorship. This will give Illinois time to recruit a solid Democratic Candidate to run in 2010. They need to hurry up on this because Mark Kirk, IL-10, congressman is all over local television here in Chicago, looking more like an uncorrupted candidate for the Republican Party.

Democrats need to get this distraction off the table before Barack Obama's Inauguration, January 20, 2009.
