Judge Sonia Sotomayor making the rounds on Capitol Hill

Judge Sotomayor with Senate Leader Harry Reid (D-NV)

Sonia Sotomayor arrived on Capitol Hill this morning to begin a marathon round of courtesy calls with senators, including Republicans who remain skeptical about her nomination and are in no hurry to confirm her.

The 54-year-old judge is in line to become the first Latina and third woman to serve on the Supreme Court, and Democrats welcomed her nomination as a historic milestone and a slam dunk for confirmation.

"Everyone in America, I want them to understand that we have the whole package here," Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) told reporters when Sotomayor arrived at his Capitol office this morning, the first stop on her itinerary.

With the help of White House officials, Sotomayor continued to put the finishing touches on a detailed Senate questionnaire. The nominee, who has been a federal appeals court judge since 1998, is slated to meet with Senate leaders along with top members of the Judiciary Committee, which will hold hearings on her nomination this summer. read more here....
