Former Senator Edward Brooke (R-MA) awarded the Congressional Gold Medal (Video)

From left: US President Barack Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-NV, former senator Edward William Brooke, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-KY, listen to the national anthem during the Congressional Gold Medal presentation ceremony for Brooke October 28, 2009 in the Rotunda of the US Capitol in Washington, DC. Brooke was the first African American to be elected to the Senate by popular vote.

At a Capitol ceremony honoring him, the 90-year-old Massachusetts Republican addressed a multitude of issues on Congress' plate in addition to health care: overseas wars, restoring the economy and providing Americans with adequate housing.

"We've got to get together," Brooke said, turning his eyes to Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. "We have no alternative. There's nothing left. It's time for politics to be put aside on the back burner."

Judge Sonia Sotomayor making the rounds on Capitol Hill

Judge Sotomayor with Senate Leader Harry Reid (D-NV)

Sonia Sotomayor arrived on Capitol Hill this morning to begin a marathon round of courtesy calls with senators, including Republicans who remain skeptical about her nomination and are in no hurry to confirm her.

The 54-year-old judge is in line to become the first Latina and third woman to serve on the Supreme Court, and Democrats welcomed her nomination as a historic milestone and a slam dunk for confirmation.

"Everyone in America, I want them to understand that we have the whole package here," Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) told reporters when Sotomayor arrived at his Capitol office this morning, the first stop on her itinerary.

With the help of White House officials, Sotomayor continued to put the finishing touches on a detailed Senate questionnaire. The nominee, who has been a federal appeals court judge since 1998, is slated to meet with Senate leaders along with top members of the Judiciary Committee, which will hold hearings on her nomination this summer. read more here....

FLOTUS, Michelle Obama unveils the bust of Sojourner Truth at the U.S. Captiol Visitors Center (Pictures)

Michelle Obama says she hopes abolitionist Sojourner Truth would be proud to see a descendent of slaves as America's first black first lady.

Mrs. Obama made the comment Tuesday as she helped unveil a bust of Truth, the first black woman to be honored with a statue at the Capitol.

"I am proud to be able to stand here on this day," the first lady told the audience of mostly women.

Truth is a former slave who met with Abraham Lincoln and was an early crusader for women's right to vote and an end to slavery.

Mrs. Obama said her two young daughters will now be able to "see the face of a woman who looks like them" when they visit the nation's Capitol.

The sculpture will remain on permanent display in the Capitol Visitor Center.
