Obama will be in Springfield, IL on February 12th for Lincoln Celebration

Yes, coming back to the Land of Lincoln.

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) today announced that President Barack Obama has accepted his invitation to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln's birth in Springfield, Illinois. Obama will attend the Abraham Lincoln Association's annual Lincoln birthday banquet, which is scheduled for February 12, 2009. Durbin began working with the Obama transition team on this invitation just days after the election last November.

"Abraham Lincoln's legacy is deeply rooted in his home state of Illinois," said Durbin. "Last week, our state proudly looked to Washington once again as another son of Illinois took the presidential oath of office. As our country's economic challenges grow, President Barack Obama will be called on to show leadership and courage similar to that shown by Lincoln during one of the most difficult periods in our history. I am honored to have the opportunity to welcome our new President back to Springfield for this important celebration of Lincoln's life."

The Obamas visit the Lincoln Memorial

It is that time to get familiar with your new surroundings, but even more to GET OUT OF THAT HOTEL. The Obama Family is used to being on the go, this is definitely a changer for them.

President-elect Barack Obama made an impromptu visit Saturday night with his family to see the Lincoln Memorial, paying tribute to a former president he frequently invokes as an inspiration.

Obama arrived in his motorcade shortly after 7 p.m. He stepped out with his wife Michelle and daughters Malia and Sasha and walked up the steps into the memorial.

After visiting the memorial for about 20 minutes, Obama and his family walked out, facing the reflective pool and Washington Monument. He waved to some passersby standing around the memorial's lower steps.

Obama frequently invokes the memory of Lincoln. He announced he was running for president in Springfield, Ill, at the steps of the Old Capitol, where Lincoln was a legislator.

Obama to take Oath of Office on same bible as Abraham Lincoln

This is classy.

Barack Obama will be sworn into office with the same Bible that Abraham Lincoln used for his first inauguration in 1861.

The move further extends the parallels that Mr. Obama has drawn with Lincoln since he announced his candidacy for president in February 2007 in Springfield, Ill.

I know kumbaya sounds corny, but he is our kumbaya president. He does not like drama, fighting, in-fighting, etc. He is fine with disagreeing, but looks for common ground.
This will be the first time an incoming president has used Lincoln’s Bible, which is part of the collection at the Library of Congress. (New presidents are not required to swear in on a Bible, but most have done so, and most use their own family Bible.)

Whether we may agree with Obama's stance or not, it is a refreshing outlook from the eight years of Bush/Cheney dominance, which carried the attitude of "you are with us, or against us." This is what the international community has been waiting for, a president who is pragmatic, a listener, and one that many can work with.

And using Abraham Lincoln's bible is just awesome, at least to me.
