Sarah Palin's daughter, Bristol, 17 is pregnant. (And Obama's Response)

There have been some ugly rumors floating on the internet about Sarah Palin and her infant son. Which have been proven not true. Moving from that noise, now we encounter that the 17 year old daughter of the Vice Presidential nominee for McCain is indeed five months pregnant.

Reuters: "The 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.

Bristol Palin, one of Alaska Gov. Palin's five children with her husband, Todd, is about five months pregnant and is going to keep the child and marry the father, the Palins said in a statement released by the campaign of Republican presidential candidate John McCain.

This is bad on many levels.

First, we look at the first family and second family of this nation as above board. Sure, kids may get in trouble, but we don't expect pregnancy. Sorry, we don't.

Next, this validates that the McCain Campaign picked Palin in haste, thus did not vett Palin, nor her family at all. Now we know why McCain aides are in Alaska, now trying to clean up and scrub this mess. Yes, it is a mess, since they never sent an advance team to question Palin at all.

This is a reminder, for me, of the Britney Spears, little sister Jamie Lynn incident. She was 16 when pregnant and 17 when she had her baby. The press had a field day on the "mothering" of the Spears Girls. Opening a door on parenting and the Palins will be questioned on this front. The Palins have a disabled challenged infant, as he grows will need immediate and total care, now a 17 year old daughter who is pregnant, confused does raise questions if Sarah Palin should have this VP job. Palin's view on abstinence only, will also be questioned. Sorry all this will be brought up.

Now McCain Camp are trying to say they "knew about this", which means they "did not" and are attempting to put lipstick on a pig.
Here's a statement the McCain camp released from Todd and Sarah Palin, which is identical to the quote in the Reuters story: "We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us. Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We're proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support."

"Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi's privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates."

Imagine if one of Obama's daughters were pregnant? They would be raked over the coals. This is a turnoff to moderate voters who are Democrats or Republicans. Palin touts abstinence but obviously the teachings did not go to her daughter.

This stinks.

And if anyone believes that McCain knew, THINK AGAIN.

This campaign is turning into a soap opera, and that is NOT what the presidency is about.

And McCain's judgment? That is the question here, his judgment.

Barack Obama's Response:
"I have said before and I will repeat again: People's families are off limits," Obama said. "And people's children are especially off-limits. This shouldn't be part of our politics. It has no relevance to Gov. Palin's performance as a governor or her potential performance as a vice president. So I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories. You know my mother had me when she was 18 and how a family deals with issues and teenage children, that shouldn’t be a topic of our politics."

On charges that his campaign has stoked the story via liberal blogs:

"I am offended by that statement. There is no evidence at all that any of this involved us," he said. "Our people were not involved in any way in this, and they will not be. And if I thought there was somebody in my campaign who was involved in something like that, they would be fired."

You know, to me this just means that Palin's family is more natural than we thought. She may get a lot of symphaty votes from millions of families that went though this same situation. The fact that the kid is having the baby enforces her view of abortion. So my suggestion is to not make a big deal out of it or it will backfire on us.

I agree. But this is about JUDGEMENT, and not good for the McCain Camp. I feel bad for this young lady, put in the national spotlight, well used to a point, but this goes to McCain not vetting properly. He will get millions votes on this, but he will lose millions on his judgement, alone.

I do think this is a personal issue for the Palin family. I also think the question of sex education in schools, protection against STDs, and the right to choose should be talked about because of this. What if her daughter's life was in jeopardy? It's all about an understanding of real people in the real world. Not a world where we would have a 17 year old marry the father of her baby in a shot-gun wedding.

I wonder if the McCain campaign will re-think their VP nominee. Sarah could decided to pull out.
You know it's not that this doesn't happen all the time (more natural?,) but it's that the abstinence crowd, the we're more moral than you are crowd make a habit of consistently NOT practicing what they preach! It's the hypocrisy that should be pointed out. It's classic Republican...do as I say, not as I do. It's fair game!

BTW, I religiously read your blog though have never commented or told you so. It's the best! Thank you!
I don't agree with the first post. Much has been made of Palin's motherhood. Now we find that she has put her own political ambition over the well-being of her own daughter. She accepted the VP nomination knowing her daughter was pregnant and knowing the scrutiny it would bring to her 17-year-old. This is not "natural." For those of us who are dedicated mothers, it is really quite horrendous.
Janice, you took the words right out of my mouth. What parent, mother or father - let's not just make this a "woman thing" - would put themselves under this extreme scrutiny knowing that their unmarried teen daughter was pregnant? What kind of parent leaves home to go on the campaign trail with an infant with down's syndrome? The GOP is always portraying itself as the "family values" party. Talk about not practicing what they preach.

I very much agree that a woman can do a good job of raising her children while being a working mother. There is a limit to this though... the VP of the US is a HUGE job, and she doesn't have just 1 or 2 kids, she has 5 and one on the way (grandchild). Are the kids taking care of each other? Is the dad a stay at home dad?

I have a hard enough time getting my 3 children to behave in a proper manner working part time!
Dear Kate91, in mentioning Pailin's child with down's syndrome, YOU, took the words out of my mouth. This I feel presents a larger question in my mind!,..that question is, What kind of a Christian, Pro-Life, Republican, Mother, of FIVE, runs for Vice President,...hence dropping/abandoning her family, including an infant with downs syndrome, and a teenage dauthter in crisis? Who turns tail and flees from ones life calling? She choose to have these children, she should be,... RAISING,...her children!
Not to mention the anathama, that she's in favor of drilling the oil in ANWR! The mere thought that a person of intelligence could destroy this national treasure!
Aloha! Johnny808
It is unfortunate that the Palin's daughter is pregnant at such an early age. Senator Obama is right to make this offlimits to his campaign. The Republicans are so smug and 'holier than thou'. This issue will vet itself without any attention from the Obama campaign. This issue and others will take on a life of their own to show the major flaws in John McCain's campaign. personal life and the judgment of him and his VP choice. Obama should stick to the issues and hammer the McCain folks on Bush's record of repeated failure to act in the best interests of the American people and still being supported by McCain. That is what will turn the American voters away from McCain and to the Obama-Biden side. McCain's problems are starting to mount and become visible for everyone to see. I look forward to Obama and Biden being sworn in late in January, 2009!
