I think the reason Democrats accepted the RW memes was that prominent Democrats, including Begala and Carville, who in 2004 did very little to help Senator Kerry get his messages or history across on their TV shows preferring just to make snarky attacks on Bush, turned on Kerry after the election - likely because he was a potential threat to HRC.
Maybe they thought 2004 impossible and didn't want to strengthen someone from the more liberal side of the party. However, Kerry's debates and vision made the race very close. What if he would have had more support from these prominent Democratic partisans. What if they repeated Kennedy's comments on the precursor bill to SCHIP that he and Kerry wrote based on a MA law - they both thought SCHIP important in 2008, when HRC listed it as her top accomplishment. Parts of Kerry/Kennedy remained in SCHIP as well as that bill being the starting point. HRC's main role was persuading Bill Clinton to include funding in the budget. If it was an important accomplishment to have helped Kennedy on this in 2008 - it was in 2004 too. It was on Kerry's web site - so they should known. What of how Kerry linked creating alternative fuels to a better transformational economy, cleaner air, cleaner water, better health and enhanced national security as well as global warming. On this issue and others, HRC and other Democrats liberally used his arguments in 2008.
