The Obamas Say "Farewell" to Toot (Pictures)

The Obama Family said farewell to their matriarch, Madelyn Dunham. Goodbye, Toot.

President-elect Barack Obama gathered with family and friends Tuesday for a private memorial service for the grandmother who helped raise him.

Madelyn Payne Dunham, known to her friends as Toot, died Nov. 2, two days before Obama won the election. She was 86.

Obama did not speak to reporters at the small home that had been converted into the First Unitarian Church in the neighborhood of Nuuanu.

Aides said Obama's half-sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, and her husband, Konrad Ng, also were present.

After the ceremony, Obama drove to cliffs east of Honolulu. He and about 20 members of his family climbed over a stone wall and onto rocky ledges to scatter Dunham's ashes at Lanai Lookout.

Obama earlier this year left flowers at the same cliffs in memory of his mother.

I think it is a disgrace that a person can not go to say farwell to a loved one in peace. It's not like he is going to visit the White House. Yes is is going to be President but this is tasteless of the reporters or who ever took these pictures.
I disagree. These images were from the parking area... and only an Obama staffer with a camera for the family was close for the actual ash scattering. A couple (commercial) guys with long lenses did get some grainy images - from an area where they were not obtrusive. Such images are now an important part of American history... one more way for people of planet Earth to connect with a man likely to be among the greatest of world leaders in our life times.
The name and image of Barack Hussein Obama is now public domain. I did not like the pictures taken so close to the Obamas the other day, with the children, which is probably why the Obamas did not bring their girls. News photojournalists will abide by Obama requests, but the paparazzi, just don't give a damn. Thus we saw shirtlest O, though a very pleasing sight, it must have concerned them that someone can snap photos so close.

Going to Hawai,2nd times in 2 months, for a private memorial
service in honour of her grand mother by President elect Barack
Obama shows the "LOVE" and "RESPECT" for elders and a man of
"FAITH" who beleives in "GOD" . After all we all should not forget that
America is a land of "GOD". The present of this spirit in President
Elect Barack Obama has given him the success and become
President of America over his more well todo rival Sir John McCain.
He is honest and more successes are on his way. Amin. May God
bless Barack Obama with more laurels.
I don't think there is anything that should or can be said except, God Bless you and keep you and yours Mr. O. Our hearts and prayers go out to you at this emotional time. May you get enough sleep and have the time to grieve as you must. You know your mother is here and everywhere just laughing and smiling and so proud. She knew you would win. She knows. And now she can be with you every moment. In your heart.

I am convinced in my heart that your grandmother knew you would win the election. I also believe that she shared that with you when you went to see her before her passing. You are remarkable and have handled the passing of your grandmother, and all the disparities life has thrown at you with grace and humility. Only God gives grace to the humble (1Peter 5:5).

Just one more word to encourage you and your family dear President-Elect, and that is, to cast the whole of your care—all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns—once and for all on God because he cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully (1 Peter 5: 7, Amplified Bible, paraphrased).

"disparities" is not the best choice of words here, so I retract it and replace it with the phrase..."and all the different things life has thrown at you." FORGIVE ME!

Obama is in a position to decide if the taking of pictures is OK or not.
I wouldn't want to upset this powerful man if I had a camera

I am grieving right along with him. My Grandmother died 2 days short of her 103rd birthday. Out of 33 grandchildren, I was her companion till the end.
